Help for the Relationship Search

Contents

This search looks for a relationship between two individuals. This is performed by looking up the Ahnentafel list for each of the two individuals and then cross-checking one list against the other to find common ancestors. While some may think that all
Mennonites and Hutterites from Prussia and Russia
are related, a positive result may not be found in every case. On the other hand, we have seen over 1000 unique paths to different common ancestors!

Be prepared for this to be time-consuming. It is not unusual for this search to take a couple minutes. A full 14-generation search where the two individuals have large pedigrees required 30 minutes.

Selecting the individuals. Enter the names OR GM Numbers of the two individuals in the form. If a name is entered, a search will be initiated.
However, by first performing an individual search for each, you may be more efficient. Those names will appear in the Session History or Bookmarks. Then, clicking on the "1" and "2" symbols will transfer the GRanDMA number into the form.

As we noted, these searches have the potential of being time-consuming. It depends on how far back and how fully the pedigree chart is populated. This search defaults to a limit of 12 generations with the options of 8 or 14 generations.

The On-screen Output

When the search is complete, the results will appear on screen. The chart shows the common ancestor at the top. If 50 or more relationships are found, they are not displayed on screen. The download file will be complete, however.

When this chart is printed, page-breaks will be avoided within a chart, and where there are multiple charts, they will usually be printed one to a page. The output is formatted to create a good permanent record whether directed to a printer or to a pdf file.

Output file An editable file is created that can be downloaded, one page for each distinct relationship.
The file displays nicely in Word (see the image at the right). An alternative is Google Docs; however, with Docs, un-requested borders do appear for cells that should be blank.
