How to Save or Print a GMOL Report

There are several ways to save or print reports, and they vary according to what is available for a page. Some pages are charts, some are text, and many are somewhere in between. Here are some options:

Print or save a document through the Browser.

Using your browser, print the screen-image of the page directly on your printer. Or, you can make a pdf of the report by selecting "Save to PDF" as the printer on most browsers.

GRanDMA OnLine does some optimizing for printing GMOL web pages:

  • Most of the time, GMOL hides the interactive navigation menu and buttons at the top and bottom.
  • In some reports, where it is in the way, GMOL hides the top banner.
  • In a few cases, GMOL can re-orient the page to be suitable for either portrait or landscape printing.
  • GMOL often changes the color selection to black so the text is clearer on paper.
  • On some pages, page-breaks are controlled so sections stay together.
What GMOL cannot do:
  • It cannot set up the header and footer directly. If you don't want some of that information on your browser-printed page, you must set that up through the browser.
  .doc file

Microsoft doc Format.

This format is available for some reports. They may be downloaded as a .doc file.

Other pages might provide a simple text file. It may be of interest that the internal encoding for GRanDMA Online .doc files is RTF (Rich Text Format.)
With a .doc file (or a text file), you can:
  • Open and edit the report in Word, Google Docs or another word processor.
  • Edit it or save it in Microsoft Word (docx, pdf or text formats).
  • Don't have Microsoft Word available? Convert it online to something else: .docx, .pdf, image files, other word-processing formats, presentation format like PowerPoint, or EBook format. The free service at https://convertio.co is excellent for converting to other formats. (Google Docs handles our doc files that contain tables much better after conversion to docx.)
As of 4/18/2023, the following reports produce downloadable, editable .doc files:
  • Individual Profile
  • Simple Ahnentafel
  • Narrative Ahnentafel
  • Descendants
  • Group Sheets
  • Alphabetic or birthdate lists
  • Individual Timelines
  file in image format

Image Format.

A few reports output a high-resolution graphics (png) file which can be embedded in other documents or taken to a commercial printer to print at high resolution.

  .csv file or
  .txt file

Lists.

Sometimes you just need a list to put in a spreadsheet or working document. A number of reports provide lists as either txt or csv files. .csv files can be opened in Excel or Google Sheets.

Others.

I continue to work on and search for other solutions. If you have a particular need, let me know (klr).
